2023年8月15日、Appleが初代iMacを発売してから25年が経ちました。初代iMacといえば、キュートなデザインと、華やかなカラーが印象的です。発売当時の様子について書きたいものの、当時（1998年）は、まだ私が生まれる前で当時の様子がわからない…。そこで、Apple創設者であるスティーブ・ジョブズ氏の名言や動画を閲覧できる「Steve Jobs Archive」を覗いてみました。

Yesterday the market data was released, and …. (drum roll) …. iMAC WAS THE NUMBER ONE SELLING COMPUTER IN THE U.S. during the month of November in U.S. retail and mail order channels, outselling all other brands!!
iMac captured 7.1% of unit volume and 8.2% of dollar volume, propelling Apple’s overall market share in retail and mail order to double from about 5% in August to 10% in November. This incredible achievement is the result of our hard work. Please take a moment and reflect on how far we have come in the last 18 months. It’s amazing what we have all accomplished together. I am very proud of our team, and feel so excited to be at Apple. Have a wonderful holiday.

初代iMac発売日の4カ月後に、ジョブズ氏がApple社員へ向けて送ったメールを見つけました！ 初代iMacが、アメリカでもっとも売れたコンピュータと報道されたことが書かれています。「やったぜ！」というタイトルや、本文内にドラムロールを鳴らす様子が表現されていることから、ジョブズ氏が興奮している様子が伝わってきます。
初代iMacはジョブズ氏がAppleに復帰してから発表した最初の製品でした。しかも、開発は社全体ではなく、小さなグループ内で進められていたのだそうです。
私も現在、24インチのiMacを使っています。機能はもちろん、その美しい佇まいが大好きで、毎日眺めてもデザインに飽きることがありません。今後iMacがどのように進化していくのか、いちユーザとして楽しみにしています！
